Dr. Deborah Bender

Dr. Deborah Bender, research professor of health policy and management at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach in China.

Bender will lecture about putting public health policy into practice at Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, through February 2009.

The Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

Bender earned a doctorate in medical anthropology and sociology from American University in 1980 and a master’s degree in public health from UNC in 1981.

She received a Fulbright Research Award in 1985 and a Fulbright Senior Scholar Lecturer Award for her work in Colombia, South America, in 1984. She also earned a Chapman Family Faculty Fellowship grant, a $20,000 contribution to faculty salary, effective spring 2009.

Her current fellowship began in September.
