Andrea Bazán

Andrea Bazán, MPH, alumna of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, was the guest of honor on Aug. 6 at ¡Levantate, North Carolina!, held in Meredith College’s Jones Auditorium. Former N.C. Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. was the keynote speaker, and WRAL-TV anchor Pam Saulsby served as master of ceremonies.

¡Levantate! might be translated Rise up!

The event recognized Bazán for her efforts to ensure that all North Carolina residents – regardless of background or circumstances – have access to basic services, health care and higher education. A panel including Gov. Hunt, Center for New North Carolinians Director Nolo Martinez, Meredith College President Maureen A. Hartford, and Bazán, spoke about ways to strengthen North Carolina’s Latino community and provide educational services for all of the state’s citizens.

Bazán graduated from UNC’s School of Public Health in 1995 with a dual Master of Social Work and Master of Public Health in maternal and child health. Currently president of Triangle Community Foundation, she has served in state government, academia and the nonprofit sector.

She was executive director of El Pueblo, a Latino advocacy and public policy organization, and a lobbyist at the N.C. General Assembly for several years.

She is also a board member of the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights organization and was recently appointed to the Department of Homeland Security’s Southwest Border Taskforce.

Bazán is a mentor to many young students and frequent speaker at local and national events.
