Bartram leads new International Water Association journal

The Journal of Water Sanitation and Hygiene for Development, a new publication of the International Water Association (IWA), has presented its inaugural issue online. Developed in cooperation with The Water Institute at UNC, which is based in UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, the journal is led by editor-in-chief Jamie Bartram, PhD, professor of environmental sciences and engineering at UNC’s public health school and the Water Institute’s director. In an editorial, Bartram and other editorial board members wrote that the journal “is intended to contribute to the response to [water, sanitation and hygiene] challenges, and in doing so, will fill a critical gap in the literature and complement other IWA journals.” The board members said they would encourage research and discussion on improving policy making and practice, with a focus on the development outcomes of water, sanitation and hygiene services. One unique challenge addressed by the board was the need to include research conducted by those in lower- and middle-income countries. The journal will establish a mentoring group that will assist authors of promising papers who may face language or other barriers in producing academic-quality texts.
