Kathleen D. Barboriak, PhD , has joined the UNC School of Public Health as assistant dean for information technology. She succeeds Dave Potenziani, who is now the School’s senior associate dean.

As assistant dean for information technology, Barboriak will lead the School’s Instructional and Information Systems group. She will direct a staff of more than 35 people who manage the School’s central computing systems, desktop support, Web services, multimedia development, the Mayes Telecommunications Center and online instructional materials development.

“Kathy has the skills, the leadership qualities and the collegial personality to lead our IT efforts during a critical time in the development and enhancement of our information technology systems,” Potenziani said.

“Specifically, she is leading the Web working group – a team of communications and IIS professionals – who are updating our website to be more efficient and informative. She also will lead the Web Council, which is a broad oversight and advisory committee made up of people throughout the school from a variety of functional perspectives. Our goal is to have a much-improved website – for both internal and external audiences – that adheres to the new look and feel of the School by the time we name the School in September. We’re delighted to have her on the team.”

Barboriak received her BS degree in chemistry from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1980. She earned a PhD in organic chemistry from North Carolina State in 1991. She worked for GlaxoSmithKline (and its legacy companies) from 1987 to 2006 in roles of increasing responsibility associated with research information systems. She was U.S. director of global research information systems, director of business systems delivery, and director of discovery IT chemistry strategy. She led teams of up to 80 people, managing data for more than 3,000 discovery scientists across numerous sites worldwide.

“I’m excited about the opportunities here at the School,” Barboriak said. “I couldn’t ask for a better team of professionals and IT experts. Dave has laid an incredibly strong foundation for the School’s success in instructional and information services – particularly our leadership in distance learning technology. I’m looking forward to building on this foundation and being part of the School’s leadership team at this exciting time in our history.”
