Dr. Georges Benjamin

Georges C. Benjamin, MD, executive director of the American Public Health Association, will deliver a UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health Dean’s Lecture on health care reform, on Thursday, Jan. 27, at the School.

 
Benjamin will present “The Affordable Care Act: Implementation in a Changing Environment,” at 1:30 p.m. in the Michael Hooker Research Center’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation Auditorium. A reception will follow, from 2:30 to 3 p.m.
 
Benjamin is well known in the public health world as a leader, practitioner and administrator. He has held his current role at APHA, the nation’s oldest and largest organization of public health professionals, since December 2002.
 
At APHA, Benjamin also serves as the publisher of the nonprofit’s monthly publication, The Nation’s Health, the association’s official newspaper, and The American Journal of Public Health, the profession’s premier scientific publication. He is the author of more than 90 scientific articles and book chapters.
 
Previously he played a key role in developing Maryland’s bioterrorism plan while serving as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and enjoyed long careers with the U.S. Army (as chief of the Acute Illness Clinic at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., and chief of emergency medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.) and in public health and emergency medicine in Washington, D.C. (including as chair of community health and ambulatory care at D.C. General Hospital and Acting Commissioner for Public Health for D.C.).
 
“Dr. Benjamin is one of the most thoughtful leaders in public health during this watershed moment in federal health policy development,” said Leah Devlin, DDS, MPH, Gillings Visiting Professor of health policy and management at UNC’s public health school and former N.C. State Health Director. “His insights into the implementation of health care reform will be informative and stimulating. Students, faculty and staff will not want to miss this exciting opportunity to exchange ideas with Dr. Benjamin on this critical issue for us all.”A resident of Gaithersburg, Md., Benjamin is a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois’ College of Medicine. He is board-certified in internal medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He serves on the boards of Research America, Partnership for Prevention, and the Reagan-Udall Foundation, and is a member of the National Academies of Science’s Institute of Medicine.
