J. Luckey Welsh, CEO of Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, North Carolina, was named the 2007 recipient of the Alumni Leadership Award by the School’s Department of Health Policy and Administration during its annual awards ceremony.

The alumni award is given annually to an individual who has had a distinguished career in health policy or administration. Mr. Welsh received his Master of Public Health (MPH) from the School in 1983.

Mr. Welsh has been the Chief Executive Officer of the medical center since 1995. Prior to that appointment, he was the senior vice president and chief operating officer. Under his leadership, the Southeastern Regional Medical Center has grown from a small-town hospital to a regionally-focused facility that now has a heart center, comprehensive cancer and imaging services, diabetes center, community health and fitness program and a network of primary care clinics.

“It’s a privilege for us to say that Luckey Welsh is an alumnus of our program,” said Peggy Leatt, PhD, professor and chair. “He is a wonderful role model for our students and has provided outstanding leadership in southeastern North Carolina, especially by providing much-needed health services to underserved populations. We’re very proud of his accomplishments.”
