Since 2007, Julie MacMillan has been the Managing Director of Research and Innovation Solutions, a program funded by the $50 million pledge from Dennis Gillings and Joan Gillings. The program gives the School significant resources to solve substantial public health problems and quickly translate them into practice across North Carolina and around the world. Julie oversees all programs funded by the Gilling’s Gift, including the Gillings Innovation Labs and various strategic investments and student support offerings, and helps to forge innovation and entrepreneurship among the faculty, students, and staff through investment, advice, and logistical support.
Julie worked at Quintiles from 1988 until 2004, initially as a biostatistician. As the company grew, she held various global administrative positions, including that of Senior Vice President, Corporate Administration, responsible for global quality assurance, media relations, internal communication, the corporate website, and administration of the Chairman’s office. In her final assignment at Quintiles, she served as Interim President, North American Clinical Development Services Division, managing 2,000 employees and a $250 million annual budget. Julie MacMillan also served as Interim Senior Associate Dean at UNC Gillings in 2010. She received a BA in biology from Wellesley College and a master’s degree in biostatistics from the UNC School of Public Health.
