2006 graduates now cherished alumni

“Savor this day!” Carolina School of Public Health Dean Barbara K. Rimer told more than 220 new graduates gathered in Memorial Hall. “You worked very hard to get here, and we are very proud of you.” The School awarded degrees to 550 people this year from 34 countries and 17 states. Of those, 10% were African American, 13% were Asian, 3% were Hispanic and 2% were American Indian. “You have the chance to break the bonds of human suffering through your work,” Rimer told the graduates. “I encourage you to look for sustainable solutions to the world’s health problems. Don’t lose sight of the optimism that brought you here.” Janet Murguma, president of the National Council of La Raza, a non-profit organization focused on improving conditions for Hispanic Americans, challenged the graduates to be advocates for change in the world of public health.

“I don’t need to remind this audience about the broad range of health disparities experienced by Hispanic Americans,” said Murguma. Hispanic Americans are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases, are less likely to have health coverage, and often lack important information about disease prevention and treatment, she said. Murguma recognized the graduating class’ service to Latinos and other underserved populations. “No matter where your career takes you, I hope that you will maintain your commitment to improving health care for all Americans,” she said.
